Son of Harold Weld who resided in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Raymond served as a Sergeant & Gunner on F-7B Liberator #44-40422, 20th Combat Mapping Squadron, 6th Photographic Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

The F-7B Liberator #44-40422 was a modified B-24J used for photographic reconnaissance.

Raymond resided in Hartford County, Connecticut prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on February 21, 1942 at Bradley Field, Windsor Locks, Connecticut. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Photographer and also as Single, without dependents.

F-7B #44-40422 took off from APO 920, Biak Island, Papua, New Guinea on a combat mission over Leyte Island, Philippines with a crew of 11 airmen. After a successful mission and while returning to APO 920 this F-7B ran into severe weather and called out "Mayday" several times. The base and other aircraft tried to contact them without success.

Later war documents from the Japanese Army's 36th Division diary note that this F-7B landed in a swampy area near Sarmi, Indonesia and all of them survived this landing.

The diary noted that there was a gun fight with some of the aircrew members resulting in the Japanese losing one of their officers and that some of of the aircrew were also killed in this gun battle. They then noted that two of the Americans were killed trying to canoe out to sea. One was shot and fell into the river and that another member of the crew was killed trying to swim away.

Three of them were captured by the Japanese to include: 2nd Lt. Rafael, Sgt. Julian, and Sgt Catlin and all three of them were "executed" near the Amisira village.

Raymond was "Killed In Action" on this mission.

His remains were not recovered.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
