U.S.S. Meredith was attacked and struck by an estimated 14 bombs and seven torpedoes. Meredith rolled over and sank in 10 minutes. Of the crew of 273 on board that day, only eight officers and 73 enlisted men survived the attack
Nicholas was declared " Missing In Action " in this sinking during the war.
He was awarded a Purple Heart.
