Joseph, who resided at 2310 Carter Street, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Seaman First Class and armed guard on the merchant ship S.S. Henry Knox, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was declared "Missing In Action" when the S.S. Henry Knox was torpedoed and sunk by Japanese U-37 in the Indian Ocean while enroute to Iran from Australia.

He had served in the Navy for ten months at the time of his death and was decorated with a Purple Heart.

Son of Joseph Gerard Smith, Sr. and Laura Marie Hunt Smith.
