Ralph, who resided at 129 East Main Street, Newark, Delaware, served as a Aviation Ordnanceman, Second Class on the U.S.S. Suwannee (CVE-27), U.S. Navy during World War II.

Aviation Ordnanceman, Second Class Ralph R. Skillman was mortally wounded in first of two kamikaze attacks against U.S.S. Suwannee. Though rescued from water by a destroyer escort, he died of his wounds and was buried at sea.

He had served in the Navy for one year and two months at the time of his death.
