Edward, who resided at 421 Porter Street, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Signalman Third Class on the destroyer U.S.S. Underhill (DE-682), U.S. Navy during World War II.

The Underhill, a Buckley-class destroyer escort, was hit by two Japanese Kaiten manned torpedos and sank approximately 200 to 300 miles northeast of Cape Engaño during the war.

The Japanese Kaiten manned torpedos only hit and sank two other ships during the war. One was the infantry landing craft (LCI-600) with a loss of 3 men and the other was the U.S.S. Mississinewa (AO-59) with a loss of 63 crew members.

A total of 112 crew members of the Underhill perished in the explosion including the ship's Commander, LCDR Robert Masten Newcomb, while 122 survived.
