John Calvin Akins was born on 25 April, 1832, in Carrollton, Carroll Co., Georgia. The son of William Akins Jr. and Mary Quatermas; about 1836 he moved with his family to Fish Creek in Polk Co., Georgia, where his father had received a bounty land grant for 160 acres for services rendered during the War of 1812. In 1855 he moved with his family to Whitesville, Marshall Co., Alabama, where he met and married his first wife, Sarah Ellen Watson (daughter of Eli and Rebecca Watson) on 18 January, 1856. In 1862 John Calvin Akins, his wife and children moved to Walker Co., Alabama, where he enlisted in the Confederate Army that same year, serving as a private in Company H, 56th Alabama Cavalry Partisan Rangers, until the end of the war. He died on 1 March, 1922, and is buried beside his second wife, Sarah Catherine Cole, at Union Chapel Methodist Church cemetery, Walker Co., Alabama.
