Joseph served as a Staff Sergeant on B-24D "Seafood Mama" #41-24219, 321st Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Cochise County, Arizona prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Cavalry on January 17, 1941 prior to the war. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Farm Hand and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24D #41-24219 took off, with a crew of 10, from Port Moresby, National Capital District, Papua New Guinea on a bombing mission over Rabaul, East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea.

Over Rabaul they were attacked by Japanese fighter aircraft and shot down. They crashed near Rabaul.

In late 1944 the crash site was located by the U.S. military and the entire crew was first interred in the USAF Cemetery at Soputa, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea on December 18, 1944. They were all later re-interred in various locations.

Joseph was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Joseph's next of kin was noted as Mrs. Blanche Gray who resided in Clarendon, Texas.
