He resided in Ware County, Georgia prior to the war.

John was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was attacked by Japanese fighters and crashed at sea five miles north-west of Kahili Airfield (Buin) during the war.

He was awarded a "Distinguished Flying Cross with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster", Air Medal, and the Purple Heart.
