Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until December 1, 1943.

William, who resided at 1209 West Seventh Street, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Lieutenant Junior Grade on the U.S.S. New Orleans, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was declared "Missing In Action" in the Battle of Tassafaronga.

He had served in the Navy for one year and was decorated with a Purple Heart.

William was the only Delawarean lost on the New Orleans.
