John served as a Lieutenant Commander, U.S.S. Shark (DD-314), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Colorado prior to the war. His wife was residing in Bethesda, Maryland during the war and some records note that John was originally from Bethesda.

He was declared "Missing In Action" when the Shark was most likely sunk, by the Japanese destroyer Harukaze, in Luzon Strait during the war. He was awarded a "Silver Star" with Gold Star and a Purple Heart.
