Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until November 25, 1945.

Brother of Mrs. Dora F. Riddle who resided in the District Of Columbia.

John served as a Lieutenant, U.S.S. Edsall (DD-219), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in the District Of Columbia prior to the war.

John was declared "Missing In Action" when the Edsall, while coming to the aid of the U.S.S. Pecos, was attacked and sunk off Java during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

The Edsall was fired on by 1,335 Japanese shells from multiple ships in the early afternoon with no more than one or two hits, which failed to stop the destroyer. 26 Type 99 divebombers (Aichi D3A) then attacked the Edsall and finally made it immobile. She was only then, finally, sunk by enemy ships.
