Charles served as a Ship Fitter Second Class, U.S.S. LST-469, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was declared "Missing In Action" when the U.S.S. L.S.T. 469 was torpedoed off the coast of Australia and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He had served in the Navy for eleven months at the time of his death.
