Robert served as a Steward's Mate First Class, U.S.S. Santee (CVE-29), U.S. Navy during World War II.
He resided in the District Of Columbia prior to the war.
Robert was "Killed In Action" when the Santee was strafed by Japanese planes during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
His remains were buried at sea.

StM1c Dickerson was KIA aboard USS Santee, one of two escort aircraft carriers which participated in the Battle of the Surigao Strait at the south end of Leyte Island, one of the Naval battles which were part of the 3-day Battle of Leyte Gulf, east of Leyte Island in the Philippine Sea. The escort carrier Santee was hit early in the morning of 25 October 1944 by a kamikaze (Japanese suicide plane), killing several Santee crewmen. Emergency repairs saved Santee from sinking.
