Date Of Loss:
With the USS Houston burning and sinking in the Sunda Strait on February 28, 1942, Private Charles went looking for PFC Corsberg, as he knew the latter was a poor swimmer. “He was on the five-inch guns behind the hangar,” Charles would later write. “I’d get a life raft and get him on it, and somehow we’d make it to shore together.” Sadly, Charles was unable to find his friend before a torpedo dealt the fatal blow to the cruiser; Howard Corsberg was never seen alive again. He was officially declared dead on December 15, 1945.
