Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until January 7, 1946.

James served as a Sergeant & Engineer / Gunner on B-25D #41-29708, 71st Bomber Squadron, 38th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Carroll County, Georgia prior to the war.

B-25D #41-29708 took off, with a crew of 7 and other B-25's, from 17 Mile Drome, Central Province, Papua New Guinea on a shipping strike off Buna, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea.

They are believed to have been hit by anti-aircraft fire causing them to ditch in the sea during the war. The entire crew was lost.

James was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
