Son of Everett Britton and Rachael Lindsay Britton.

Husband of Betty Lee Wingert Britton.

Richard, who lived at 2002 Monroe Place in Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Lieutenant Junior Grade on the U.S.S. Capelin (SS-289) a Balao-class submarine during World War II.

While on patrol in the Molucca Sea and Celebes Sea near Australia the U.S.S. Capelin disappeared and was assumed to have struck a mine or sunk by the Japanese. All on board were lost.

Richard was delcared "Missing In Action" along with the rest of the crew.

Richard had served one year, eleven months and was decorated with the Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and World War II Victory Medals.

His remains were not recovered.
