Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until September 6, 1943, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

Bailis served as a Ensign, U.S.S. Little, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in the District Of Columbia prior to the war.

Bailis was declared "Missing In Action" when the Little was hit by a salvo from an enemy ship and sank near Guadalcanal during the war.
