Harold, who resided at 211 Market Street, Seaford, Delaware, served as an Electrician's Mate Second Class on the U.S.S. Preston (DD-379), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Seaford, Sussex County, Delaware prior to the war. He enlisted in the Navy prior to the war on December 5, 1938 in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Preston was sunk in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal when the Japanese cruiser Nagara fired and struck the Preston with a torpedo salvo during the war. The torpedo strike had put both firerooms out and toppled the afterstack eventually sinking the ship.

The Preston lost 116 of her crew.

Harold was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking during the war.

He had served in the Navy for three years and eleven months at the time of his death and was decorated with the Purple Heart.

Son of Harold Scott McWilliams, Sr. and Addie Hester Truitt McWilliams.

At the families request, his state of birth was added to his name on the tablets (Maryland) instead of his state of residence, as was normally done, (Delaware).

In the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, which was considered a United States strategic victory, the Navy lost 2 light cruisers, 7 destroyers, and 36 aircraft for a total of 1,732 killed in this four day battle.
