It is strongly believed the above year is incorrect since he did receive a Purple Heart. It should possibly be "1942".

Gilbert served as a Private First Class, 7th Chemical Company, Aviation, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Washington County, Maryland prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on September 5, 1940, prior to the war, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Driver and also as Single, without dependents.

Gilbert was declared "Missing In Action" during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.
