Robert served as a Corporal, Headquarter's Battery, 6th Anti-Aircraft Arty Group, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Muskegon County, Michigan prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on August 28, 1942 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Apprentice and also as Single, without dependents.

Robert was a passenger on C-47 #42-23487.

C-47 #42-23487 took off, with a crew of 4 and 18 passengers, from Garbutt Field, Townsville, Queensland, Australia on a transport mission to Gurney Airfield, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea.

One radio transmission was received from this C-47 by the radio station at Horn Island, Queensland, Australia noting they were trying to contact Gurney Airfield. After that transmission they were not seen nor heard from again and are believed to have crashed into the sea.

Robert was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
