Son of Eri Oyar Sankey (1893-1985) and Ethel June Cantrell (1896-1986).

George W. Sankey enlisted as a Private (S/N 280838) in the United States Marine Corps on 13 January 1940 in Chicago, Illinois.

April 1940 - Private Sankey was stationed at Marine Barracks, Navy Yard, Cavite, Philippine Islands. By October 1940, he was Private First Class. In November 1940, he was transferred to Marine Barracks, Naval Station, Olongapo, Philippines where he served as a "PE Attendant" through October 1941.

On 07 January 1942 now Corporal, Sankey was transferred to Company A, First Battalion, Fourth Marines, on Fort Mills, Corregidor to be a part of the island defenses. By April he was a Sergeant.

On the night of 05 May 1942, Japanese forces landed on the island near Monkey Point, where Sergeant Sankey was reportedly manning a machine gun as part of the beach defenses. The position was overrun, and the garrison surrendered at noon on 06 May.

Sergeant Sankey was among those killed in the attack. His body was seen after the battle, but his burial site was not reported and his remains have not been recovered.
