John served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-24J "Paper Doll" #42-73187, 529th Bomber Squadron, 380th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Cook County, Illinois prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on July 30, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Actor and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24J #42-73187 took off on a bombing mission over Ambon, Maluku Province, Indonesia. While over the target they were shot down by Japanese fighter planes and crashed in the sea approximately 30 miles south of Ambon. Crew members who survived the crash and were in a raft were picked up by the Japanese and all became POW's. ( see below )

John was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
