While over the target they were shot down by Japanese fighter planes and crashed in the sea approximately 30 miles south of Ambon. Crew members who survived the crash and were in a raft were picked up by the Japanese and all became POW's. ( see below )
John was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
