QM 3/c Hainline was killed in a freak accident on the USS Tang {SS-306} on 10-24-1944 when it was hit by one of its own torpedoes in the Formosa Straits. This would be the Tang's 5th patrol, and seaman Hainline's first and last voyage. The Tang came into Pearl on September 3, 1944 to change crews, and move out on the 25th of September for its last run. There were nine survivors, of those,the Skipper, Comm. Richard H. O'Kane, and the rest would be POWs of the Japanese.

He is the son of Mr. Joseph V. & Mrs. Ruby A. {Waldmier} Hainline of 412 Caroline Street in Pekin, Illinois.
