MEMORIAL SERVICES FOR P.F.C. HOWARD D. FULK AND OTHERS (March 1945)

With the 32nd Infantry Division in the Philippines, P.F.C. Howard Donald Fulk, Dieterich, Illinois, who gave his life in the battle for liberation of the Philippines, was among the soldiers honored recently in the 32nd Division memorial services held at the American cemetery near Carigara on Leyte Island.

Following prayers by both Protestant and Catholic chaplains, Major General William H. Gill, Division Commander, placed a wreath at the base of the flagpole, with the flag flying at half staff, in tribute to the men of the Red Arrow Division who died in the 32nd's heroic fighting for Leyte. As a climax to the brief but impressive ceremony, taps were sounded by a bugler and riflemen fired three volleys over the graves.

All of the 32nd Division's men who died on Leyte have been buried in one of threee neat, well-kept temporary cemeteries at Carigara, Pinamopoan, or Limon. Each is carefully attended by grateful Filipinos, under the supervision of American officers.

Howard Donald Fulk, 125th Infantry, 32nd Division died on December 3, 1944. A permanent monument is now located at Fort William McKinley, Manila, the Philippines. PFC Fulk was awarded a Purple Heart posthumously. Where PFC Howard Donald Fulk is buried is also known as Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in Manila, Philippines.
