Momm1 Fisher has been Missing in action since 4-15-1945 while serving on the Submarine, Lagarto {SS-371}, in the Gulf of Siam. His Skipper was Commander Frank D. Latta with 85 other sailors whose ship is sitting in 250 feet of water, and she is up-right. There is a large hole on the Port side of the boat, and fish netting wrapped around the Stern.

Momm1 Fisher is the son of Mr. George T. & Mrs. Minnie Rose Fisher of Pekin, Illinois, now deceased, but was living with his brother-in-law & sister, Mr. & Mrs. Alva Manhusen of 1523 Center Street in Pekin. Seaman Fisher was a 1940 graduate of Pekin H.S., and was in the Navy by August of 1940.

Momm1 Fisher did his training on Battleships and Cruisers, and was on the USS Nevada {BB-36} when Pearl Harbor was attacked on 12-7-1941, and later transferred to the USS Indianapolis {CA-35} because it took better than a year to refit the Nevada. The Crusier, Indianapolis, was sunk in the South Pacific on 7-30-1945, but Seaman Fisher needed a change of Ships, and was transferred to New London, Connecticut in November of 1944 for training on Submarines. He got the USS Lagarto.

He does leave two brothers, Fred C. Fisher of the Navy, and George J. Fisher of New York, and four sisters, Mrs. J. Stanley of Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Wonder of Miami, Florida, Mrs. Ralph Hoppe of Peoria, Illinois, and Mrs. Alva Manhusen of Pekin.

Footnote: This Submarine was lost for 60 years, and was found 150 miles from shore in 250 feet of water in May of 2005. The USS Lagarto was built in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and launched on May 28, 1944, and she was one of 28 subs built at this facility. Here are a few of the names of the crew, H.D. Andrews, W.L. Britain, L.F. Cathey, J.R. Johnson, W.F. Honaker, J.M. Marriot, J.S. Pash, and H.R. Plushnik.
