John served as a Sergeant & Engineer / Gunner on B-25D "Miss Ellen" #41-30039, 500th Bomber Squadron, 345th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Although this bomber was assigned to the 499th Bomber Squadron, it was on temporary loan to the 500th Bomber Squadron for this mission.

He resided in Will County, Illinois prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on June 24, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the production of industrial chemicals and also as Single, without dependents.

B-25D #41-30039 took off from Dobodura Airfield on a mission to bomb and strafe Rabaul. While over Rabaul they were hit by an anti-aircraft shell below the bomb bay, causing the phosphorous bombs in the bomb bay to explode, catch fire and smoke. The bomber tried to recover however they crashed & exploded near Malaguna to the west of Rabaul during the war.

John was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
