Illinois National Guardsman called to federal service as a member of B Company, 192nd Tank Battalion. Ball trained at Ft. Knox, Kentucky before taking part in maneuvers in Louisiana in the fall of 1941. He was arrived to the Philippine Islands in November 1941 and lived through the Japanese attack on Clark Airfield. He served in the Philippine Islands during the first battles of World War II involving American tanks. Ball became a Prisoner of War when Bataan was surrendered to the Japanese on April 9, 1942. He took part in the death march and was held as a POW at Camp O'Donnell. He was transferred to Cabanatuan POW Camp when it opened. S/Sgt. John E. Ball died of malaria while a POW at Cabanatuan.
