James serve as a Sergeant & Waist Gunner on B-24J #44-41258, 400th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, Pennsylvania prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on July 12, 1943 in New York City, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Manufacturing Foremen and also as Married.

B-24J #44-41258 took off, with a crew of 10, from Mokmer Airfield, Biak, Numfor Regency, Papua Province, Indonesia on a strike mission over Libby Airfield, Mindanao, Philippines.

B-24J #44-41258 was last seen near the target but was not seen again and did not return to base. The entire crew was lost on this mission.

James was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
