Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until January 21, 1946.

Son of Mrs. Hazel Emily Freas who resided in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Charles served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on B-24D "Twin Nifty's" #42-40348, 400th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on March 10, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Salesperson and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24D #42-40348 took off, with 23 other B-24's, from 5-Mile Drome (Wards - APO #713) near Port Moresby on a night bombing mission over Boram Airfield near Wewak, Papua New Guinea. They were hit & shot down by "intense" ground anti-aircraft fire and crashed in a swamp southwest of Wewak.

Charles was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

The remains of 1st Lt. Charles R. Freas have never been found.

The rest of the crew's remains were recovered and they were interred in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery
Lemay, Missouri.
