Rex served as a Flight Officer & Pilot on P-38J #42-67773, 44th Fighter Squadron, 18th Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on August 28, 1941, prior to the war, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Actor and also as Single, without dependents.

P-38J #42-67773 took off from Munda Airfield, New Georgia Island, Western Providence, Solomon Islands on an escort mission to over Rabaul, East New Britain Province, New Britain Island, Papua New Guinea.

This P-38J was attacked by enemy aircraft and shot down crashing into the sea during the war.

Rex was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart.
