Joseph served as a Sergeant & Crew Chief on C-47 #41-38631, 33rd Squadron, 374th Troop Carrier Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Joseph was normally assigned to the 315th Troop Carrier Group but was assigned to this flight.

He resided in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania prior to the war.

C-47 #41-38631 took off from Dobodura, Oro Province Papua New Guinea on a mission to the 5 Mile Drome (Ward Drome) National Capital District, Papua New Guinea. Soon after takeoff they were attacked by Japanese Zeros and shot down near Dobodura. C-47 #41-38601 was also shot down more than likely by the same Zeros either on the same day or the day after.

Joseph was "Killed In Action" on this flight during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
