T/Sgt. Richard J. Anthony was born 28 June 1922 in Lehigh Gap, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Norman L. and Eva E. (Houser) Anthony. Richard had a brother, Allen, and a sister, Lorraine.

Richard graduated in 1940 from Mauch Chunk, now Jim Thorpe, High School, Carbon County, Pennsylvania.

SOLDIER MISSING OVER NEW GUINEA

T/Sgt. Richard J. Anthony, has been reported missing over New Guinea since October 11. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Anthony, of Jersey City, N.J., formerly of Mauch Chunk, and had been stationed at New Guinea since August 1944.

RICHARD ANTHONY MISSING OVER NEW GUINEA

Mr. and Mrs. Norman Anthony, Jersey City, N.J., formerly of Mauch Chunk, have been notified by the War Department that their son, Technical Sergeant Richard J. Anthony is reported missing over New Guinea since Oct. 11th.

He is a graduate of Mauch Chunk High School with the class of 1940, and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in January 1941. He has been stationed at New Guinea since August 1944.

Aircraft History
Built by North American. Assigned to the 38th Bombardment Group, 405th Bombardment Squadron. During September 1944, assigned to the 312th Bombardment Group, 389th Bombardment Squadron as a fat cat transport aircraft. Nicknamed "Five Minutes To Midnight".

When lost, engines: R-2600-13 serial numbers (left) 42-271575 and (right) 42-22939. Seven 50 caliber machine guns were aboard, serial numbers unknown.

Mission History
One of two planes that took off from Hollandia Airfield at 7:55am on an flight bound for Nadzab Airfield. Aboard were many passengers, all gunners from the 388th and 389th BS who were eligible to be rotated back to the United States.

Last seen on take off. Weather was cloudy with intermittent moderate showers from 1,500-2,500' and visibility of 8-12 miles. Presumed lost in the Sepik River area, possibly in the Annanberg area.

Search
When no word of arrival was received from Nadzab by 18:00, the AACS station was notified and contacted Nadzab any information.

On October 12, all stations south of Hollandia were checked, in case the crew diverted to another location. At 13:00, three aircraft from the 312th BG led by Major Graber searched the coast from Hollandia to Wewak and returned, sighting nothing. Air Sea Rescue was also notified to search.

On October 13 at 8:00, eight planes from the 312th BG led by Col. Strauss searched from Hollandia to Tadji, But, Boram and Hansa Bay, sighting nothing.

Memorials
The entire crew was officially declared dead the day of the mission and are memorialized on the tablets of the missing at Manila American Cemetery.

Richard, a resident of Mauch Chunk, Carbon County, Pennsylvania, enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 22 1941.
