He was actually assigned to the 80th Fighter Squadron, 8th Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Forces but was assigned as one of the two Engineers for this flight.

He resided in Cuyahoga County, Ohio prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 26, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Bookkeeper and/or cashier and also as Single, without dependents.

Francis was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
