William served as a First Lieutenant and Pilot on B-25D "Hell's Belles" #41-30019, 499th Bomber Squadron, 345th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Summit County, Ohio prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on March 28, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Laboratory technician and/or assistant and also as Single, without dependents.

William was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-25, while on a mission to bomb and strafe Jefman Airfield, was hit by enemy anti-aircraft flak and crashed into the sea off Jefman Island during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
