B-26 #40-1468 took off, with a crew of 7, on a bombing mission over Lae, Papua New Guinea. After a successful bombing mission, and while returning to base, they were attacked and ran into by a enemy fighter plane and crashed at sea 25 miles south east of their target. The entire crew was lost on this mission.
Vernon was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
