Husband of Mrs. Vernon D. Huddleston who resided in Dare, Virginia.
Vernon served as a Corporal & Gunner on B-26 #40-1468, 33rd Bomber Squadron, 22nd Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Montgomery County, Ohio prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army on January 4, 1940 prior to the war.
B-26 #40-1468 took off, with a crew of 7, on a bombing mission over Lae, Papua New Guinea. After a successful bombing mission, and while returning to base, they were attacked and ran into by a enemy fighter plane and crashed at sea 25 miles south east of their target. The entire crew was lost on this mission.
Vernon was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

It was report on the MACR for this flight that 4 of the crew members were reportedly picked up by a Japanese ship. However there is no report of any of them being a POW of the Japanese. That is why it took so long for the Military to officially declare them as dead. They wanted to insure that none of them were reported, after the war, as POW's.
