Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until March 7, 1946.

Byrd served as a Technical Sergeant & Engineer on a PBY-5A, OA-10A #44-33889, 3rd Squadron, 5276th Rescue Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Putnam County, Tennessee prior to the war.

OA-10A #44-33889 took off from Sorido Strip (APO #920) Biak Island, Papua New Guinea on a search & rescue mission over the Helen Island Area, Papua New Guinea. After takeoff OA-10A #44-33889 was never seen or heard from again. They are believed to have crashed at sea for an unknown reason during the war.

Byrd was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Byrd also has a "Cenotaph" in the Burton-Ashburn Cemetery, Silver Point, Tennessee.
