Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until April 8, 1945, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

Dale served as a Second Lieutenant & Pilot on P-40N #42-105517, 8th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Wayne County, Ohio prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on February 5, 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

During an air strike in the Wewak Area, East Sepik province of Papua New Guinea he was noticed by other pilots to be flying too low to the water, for an unknown reason, and he eventually crashed into the sea.

Dale was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
