Patrol Bombing Squadron 151 (VPB-151)
PV-1 Ventura
29 August – 18 November 1944: VB-151 was relocated to NAB North Field, Tinian, Marianas Islands. Daily search sectors of 400 miles (640 km), 500 miles (800 km) and 600 miles (970 km) were flown. Frequent attacks were conducted against the Yap, Woleai, Rota and Pagan islands. On 18 November, the squadron was relocated to West Field, Tinian.

VPB-151 logs record on 20 December 1944, PV-1 Ventura piloted by Lt Kelly Curtis Sandy (99669) took off on a search, recon and bombing flight. The targeted mission was Woleai (Caroline Islands), during the attack Lt Sandy's aircraft was observed to hit the water a half mile offshore and exploded on contact. It is believed the crash was due to AA fire. Wreckage was reported but no survivors were seen. The following day a 4 aircraft SAR mission was conducted with negative results.

AOM2 Hugh Wright was a crew member (gunner) of Lt Sandy's aircraft on 20 December 1944 and was killed in action with 5 crew members of the PV-1 Ventura.
