Merlyn Lyle Thompson enlisted in the Marine Corps on 15 December, 1941 from Dexter, Iowa. Qualified Rifle Marksman and completed recruit training in the 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA.
24 January, 1942 assigned to D Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division, MCB Camp Elliott, CA. During March, 1942 assigned to M Company, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division.
1 July, 1942 embarked USS President Adams (APA-19) at San Diego for movement overseas. 25 July, 1942 landing rehearsals at Koro, Fiji attached to the 1st Marine Division.
8 August, 1942 landed on Gavutu in the Solomons and participated in combat operations until Killed in Action when an aerial bomb hit his position.
Body Not Recovered.

13 October, 1949 remains determined non-recoverable by an AGRS Field Board.
