Robert Samuel Russell enlisted in the Marine Corps 22 November, 1940 from Burlington, Iowa. Completed recruit training in the 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. Assigned to Radio Operator School, Signal Detachment, MCB San Diego, CA.
During June, 1941 embarked Naval Transport at San Diego for movement overseas to MCAS Ewa on Oahu. 1 July, 1941 assigned to Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 232 (VMSB 232).
7 December, 1941 present during the Japanese air attack. 19 January, 1942 promoted to Private First Class. 1 August, 1942 promoted to Corporal.
20 August, 1942 arrived at Guadalcanal and began conducting combat operations from Henderson Air Field. Declared Missing in Action after not returning from an air mission to Gizo Island 6 September, 1942.
Declared dead 7 September, 1943.

Body not recovered.
