Having officially gone "Missing In Action" on the above date, He was not officially declared as being dead by the military until January 25, 1946.

Philip served as a Staff Sergeant & Radio Operator on B-24D "Sunshine I" #42-41225, 529th Bomber Squadron, 380th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Hampden County, Massachusetts and was a member of the Massachusetts National Guard prior to the war.

His National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service on January 16, 1941, prior to the war, from Springfield, Massachusetts. He was noted, at that time, as being employed in printing and publishing and also as Single, without dependents.

Philip was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-24, while on a bombing mission against Dagua Airfield near Wewak, was hit by enemy flak and crashed in the South Pacific during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
