He was a Chief Motor Machinist Mate aboard the submarine USS Seawolf (SS-197] during WW II. The ship was torpedoed and all were lost. He was awarded the Silver and Bronze Star posthumously.

McCoy served on the USS Seawolf. The Seawolf was reportedly sunk on October 3, 1944, with all hands, by the USS Rowell (DE403) north of the Philippines. The Rowell had mistook the Seawolf for a Japanese sub. The Seawolf had been on a mission to drop Army personnel off on the east coast of Samara.
