1940 Graduate University of Kentucky / He earned a B. S. in commerce and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha, Keys, Pershing Rifles, and the Catholic Club.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Georgetown, Kentucky.

Thomas married Helen McIlvaine on December 1, 1941, in MacClenny, Florida.

Missing in Action


On 14 December 1944, Thomas' Hellcat was one of 36 planes shot down over Manila and Luzon Island. The planes were performing a fighter sweep over Clark Field. Flying from nine different ships, the pilots were from fighting squadrons 3, 4, 7, 11, 20, 22, 29 and 45. The bombing had started in October and lasted for four months with 1500 Japanese planes damaged. The American forces regained control of Clark Airfield in January 1945.
