Walter's remains were discovered in 2002 and recovered in 2003. His remains were identified in 2006. He is now interred in a group burial at the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

He also has a "Cenotaph" with his parents in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa.

A "Rosette" was placed in front of his name here at Manila to signify that his remains were recovered.

Walter served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-24D "Mr. Five By Five" #42-40505, 360th Service Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Worth County, Iowa prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on July 23, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Actor and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24D #42-40505 took off from Nadzab Airfield (No. 1) on a local training flight bound for Port Moresby. They encountered a thunderstorm and went missing in the Nadzab area during the war.

Walter was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

After his remains were recovered his status was changed to "Killed In Action".
