Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until January 27, 1946.

Bernard served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on B-25D #41-30040, 498th Bomber Squadron, 345th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Fayette County, Kentucky prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on April 2, 1942 in Lexington, Kentucky. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Driver and also as Married.

B-25D #41-30040 took off, with a crew of 7 & other B-25's, from Nadzab Airfield, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea on a bombing mission over Dagua Airfield, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea.

After a bombing run they were seen entering a cloud and were not seen nor heard from again. The entire crew was lost.

Bernard was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the "Silver Star", Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Purple Heart.

Bernard also has a "Cenotaph" in the Calvary Cemetery, Lexington, Kentucky.
