Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until January 11, 1946.

Walter Served as a First Lieutenant & Co-Pilot on B-24D #42-40230, 424th Bomber Squadron, 307th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Polk County, Iowa prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on February 20, 1942 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Accountant and/or auditor and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24D #42-40230 took off from Carney Field (APO #709), Guadalcanal Province, Solomon Islands on a combat mission over Kahili Airfield, Bougainville Island, Bougainville Province, Papua New Guinea.

After a successful bombing run they were attacked by Japanese Zeros and left the formation. They are believed to have been shot down and crashed into the sea. The entire crew was lost.

Walter was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
