Christopher Demuth, the son of Wilhelm Gottlieb Demuth and his wife, Maria Eva Barbara Gutsler Demuth, was born in the Alemangel area of Northampton and Lehigh counties of Pennsylvania on August 22, 1755. He was the seventh of eight children born to Gottlieb and Eva. The Demuth family is of Moravian descent.

Susanna Catharina Maria Klein (Kline) became his wife on April 8, 1777. They raised ten children: Joseph, John Frederic, Susanna Catherine, Anna Rosina, Anna Maria, Rachel Elizabeth, Sarah Catherine, Sybilla Margaretha, Abigail and Lydia Demuth.

According to the History of Tuscarawas County, 1884, p. 673 Warwick Township: "John F. DeMuth, in 1800 or 1801, accompanied Lewis Knaus, Godfrey Haga, and Michael Ulrich on a horseback journey from the east...Mr. Demuth bought a small farm of 70 acres in Warwick Twp., and bringing his wife, Elizabeth (Roth) from Pennsylvania settled there. A year or two later Christian (Christopher) Demuth, the father of John, emigrated with his eight daughters and settled on 35 acres just east of the river and opposite John."

Christopher and Susanna were both active members of the Moravian Church at Gnadenhutten, and lived in that area for the rest of their lives. Susanna died on July 15,
1817.

On April 16, 1818, Christopher married Mary Elizabeth Swartz Guenther, the widow of Peter Guenther, who had died in 1814. Christopher and Elizabeth had no children.

Christopher died on Jan 27, 1822, at the age of 67, and was laid to rest beside his beloved Susanna at the Moravian Churchyard in Gnadenhutten (now known as Gnadenhutten-Clay Union Cemetery). At the time of his death, he had over 40 grandchildren to carry on his legacy.

Records indicate that Christopher Demuth served during the Revolutionary War from 1780-1783 with the 2nd Battalion of Northampton, Pennsylvania.

Christopher Demuth was the 4th great grandfather to the husband of the originator of this memorial, and to the current maintainer of the memorial.
