AMM3C Abbott was the son of Riley and Orbie Mae Edison; He was the middle of 10 children. His siblings included Thelma, John, Easter, Irma, Albert, Ruby, Stephen, Charles and a younger brother that died soon after birth in 1917. He was married to Myra Ethel Goold Abbott. She was living in Kansas City, Kansas during the period that he was reported missing in action. He was working as a general laborer prior to enlisting.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 4 Oct 1940 in Kansas City, Missouri as an Aviation Machinist Mate, then reported for duty in Norfolk, Virginia. After initial Naval Training, AMM3 Abbott eventually wound up in the Pacific Theatre-eventually participating in the various campaigns throughout the South Pacific against the Japanese.

Buin (Autonomous region of Bougainville Provence, Papua, New Guinea) in the Shortland Island area-Northern Solomons, Papua, New Guinea was occupied by the Japanese and developed into a base area with extensive fortifications. During late 1942 until the middle of 1943, the area was frequently and heavily attacked by Allied aircraft from the air and remained under Japanese control until the official surrender of Japan during September 1945.

On 14 February 1943, a force of Liberator heavy bombers (Consolidated PB4Y), with Corsair (Vought-Sikorsky F4U) and Lightning escort, attacked and scored 3 bomb hits on a large Japanese cargo ship near Buin, in the Shortland Island area-Northern Solomons. About 25 or 30 enemy planes intercepted the attack and 11 of the enemy planes were shot down. Two U. S. bombers and 6 fighters failed to return.

Records indicate AMM3 Abbott was listed as "Missing in Action" on 14 February, 1943-presumed Killed in Action; He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart Medal posthumously. His citation for the Distinguished Flying Cross reads;
