Carl served as a Lieutenant & Ship Commander, U.S.S. LST-577, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in San Diego County, California prior to the war.

He served as the Commander of LST-577 from July 2, 1944 to February 11, 1945.

LST-577 was hit by a torpedo fired from Japanese submarine RO-50 off the eastern coast of Mindanao causing the ship to brake into two and caused the aft section to sink immediately during the war. Lost aboard were 100 U.S. Army passengers and 66 of the ship's crew.

Carl was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking.

He was awarded the "Bronze Star" and the Purple Heart.
