Claude Shouse enlisted in the Marines in April 1941. He attended boot camp at MCRD San Diego and was enrolled in the Radio School in San Diego. Private Shouse joined the crew of the USS Houston in January 1942; directly from Radio School training. While aboard the USS Houston, Pvt Shouse participated in action in the battles of Makassar Strait and the Java Sea. Pvt Claude Shouse was killed when the USS Houston was sunk in the battle of Sunda Strait on the night of February 28, 1942. He is considered lost as of March 1, 1942.
